In the case of recirculating sluices they can be operated in arid desert areas with very little water. If the sluice is designed to catch and recirculate the water it is called a recirculating power sluice, or recirculating highbanker. The water pump can be either electric or gas powered. Gold bearing gravel is shoveled into the hopper box and washed over the classifier screen to remove waste gravel and pieces of rock that are too large to go through the sluice.
